Biography

Jack Lay was youngest of six children. They moved to British Columbia from Saskatchewan in 1937. Jack spent many hours fishing, tracking and bird watching at their farm near Abbotsford. A job in a meat market gave him opportunity to study the bone structure and intestines of animals and birds. With WW Two and the need for manpower Jack left school early. By 1947 Jack had become a butcher, keeping him indoors, so he tried logging and construction. Jack acquired two hounds and spent weekends removing raccoon from poultry farms. A new section of the Game Department, Predator Control, was created. paying men to hunt predators. Jack was a little short on education but long on experience and the will to work. In 1955 he was posted to Williams Lake, and in 1956 transferred back to Abbotsford where he spent 22 years dealing with wildlife problems. He teaches predator management at the B. C. Institute of Technology, and the art of harvesting problem animals and furbearers humanely.
